I have a question about playing dvd's -- the only way to play them on my comp is through a dvd drive right? I can't just buy a decoder card and use it with my current cd-rom. Thanks for answering a very stupid question.

not a stupid question just remember, he who has a question may be a fool for a moment, but he who never asks remains a fool forever.

No you can't use a CDROM to read a DVD, the laser is different.

You need a DVDRom drive, and a deocder (there are software or hardware decoders)

No you can't the format and the density of the DVD disc is different from those of the CD. The optical pickup is different. Thus, you need a DVD drive to play the DVD disc.

just in case you did not know, you can use regular CDs in the DVD drive

You should be able to use CDR and CDRW in a DVD drive also
