question about dual processing

so i want to buy a new server board that has room for two xeons. however, i dont feel like forking out 500 bucks for the two processors. is it possible to run the board on one processor until such i time i feel apt to upgrade and add the second? i'm wanting to buy a board with the intel 5000v chipset. if i do this i will probably buy this board: Text

Hi Journer,

yes, generally with the 5000V chipset, you can run "up to two" CPUs.

I tried to look into the Gigabyte board's manual--no mention of running only one CPU there.

However, in an equivalent Supermicro board, they did mention running just one CPU.

However, if you need a server board, and don't need two CPUs, which need a lot more power, give off more heat, noise, etc, then maybe a Quad Core CPU might be better? All depends on your applications/server needs, but, even two dual core Xeons in a lot of computing power.

Also, bear in mind that the 5000 series chipset requires FB-DIMM memory--good in that it is ECC and fully buffered, but, more expensive, puts off a lot of heat, etc....

Quad core, ECC ram, RAID 1 or 5 hard drives, good backup system should handle a lot of servage....
