Several months ago, when I was a complete technoob and finding parts for my first build, a friend of mine told me to look for motherboards with dual channel support. According to him, having 2x512GB DIMMS in dual channel configuration would give me 1GB of physical memory, but 2GB of 'virtual memory'. I was recently told this was complete bs. So is what I was told about dual channel support incorrect?

It's like a 4 lane highway compared to a 2 lane highway. It doesn't actually give you storage benfits but the storage you do have is faster.

Hi, Virutal Memory is Hard Drive space used as if it were memory when you run out of Real Memory. The more Real Mem you have the less often the system will have to use the Virtual Memory. Virtual is only a place to swap stuff in real mem to make room for more in real and is many times slower than real. Hope this helps a little, Jim

PS - Here's something to investigate: Why is it called DDR( Double Data Rate ) Memory?
