this is my first time having dual boot on my computer. i have vista and xp in dual boot config and the xp name shows up as "earlier version of windows" how can i rename that to win xp. also what is the best way to image the whole dual boot config so when i need to reinstall i don't have to do everything again

Try EasyBCD.

I use Acronis True Image Home to image my drives, it can image you boot config as well. I don't have any free recommendations, but would like one.😉

i tried true image but i had to repair my vista installation. maybe i didn't do it right. do i install true image in vista or xp. and how do you image the boot config

It doesn't matter which system you make the image from. I don't understand how it could mess up your installation. All you do is click on backup, select the checkboxes beside the drives you want to image and tell it where to save...

You can image the entire computer and still pick and choose what partitions you wish to restore or even which files. I only image my root partition though and use other backup methods for other data.
