Question about DSL

There's one thing I don't understand. Some DSL packages that we have looked at have a price for just DSL and then one with them providing their company as the internet provider. However, you can use any internet provider, such as MSN, AOL, etc. with DSL. What I don't understand is why do I need another internet service provider when I have DSL. In Sweden, it's $30 a month for DSL. No one ever mentioned anything about an internet service provider along with DSL. Could someone please explain what the heck is meant by having DSL and then needing another internet service provider along with it?
 
Hmm, I think the internet service provider is separate from the DSL..so either you get DSL or you get the dial up ISP from what I understand..
 
The telco charge pays for your phone line, and all of the phone equipment and whatnot involved with getting your signal to the ISP. The ISP connects you to the internet, and gives you email, webspace, etc etc.
 
The Telephone Company allocates your line as a Digital Subscriber Line and the Federal Govt. probably forces them to allow someone other than themselves to provide you with Gateway Services to the Internet as your ISP. <<I think this is the correct way to describer it. Smebody involved in the profession will probably give a better explanation but this should help.
 
I think I understand a little better now guys. Any suggestions ISPs that would be good? The DSL is going to cost $60/month for 1.5megabit down/256 up...

Yes, I believe it is due to federal law, that they open it up to others. It's actually a good law, I know the head sysadmin at a local ISP, and I trust him/them with my connection MUCH more than qwest. Big companies simply do not provide good service.
 
its federal comeptition laws that try to keep the natural telco monopoly from being some ISP monopoly too
