Question about dsl...

Question about dsl... I have pacbell dsl that has 5 ips, and so does my dads friend. Pretend i install 2 nics and have 2 cables come from the hub to my comp and connect to my dsl and my dads friends dsl at the same time, would that be 2x fast? (Both of these would be running off the same hub plugged into one dsl modem.)

A WAN is a Wide Area Network...just like a Local Area Network (LAN) only bigger. Like a network that covers the entire US, rather than one that just covers your house.

I think this idea is kind of like the dual 56K modem from a while back. That actually worked because the two modems in one machine were hooked up to two different phone lines. If you had two separate DSL lines (not just two separate modems) you could probably double your bandwidth. Talk about expensive! Just get a cable modem and pay your neighbors not to subscribe.

the SINGLE modem would limit your speed..

what i have done personally and can be done is to install two nic's with two modems(motorola SB3100 cable modems). this gave me about a 40% speed increase.


@home doesn't support this, but if you have access to CAPS it can be done

The dual 56K modems had to support this technology. Diamond called it ShotGun. In other words, there's software/hardware that must coordinate the two streams of data downloaded to your machine because both lines downloading the same packets would be pointless!

Intel uses this same technology for Ethernet. I have four full duplex Intel NICs in my server at work. Using Intel's Load Balancing Technology and , the server has a bandwith of 800Mbs instead of 200Mbs. Again, this is possible only because compatible NICs and the software running on the server to coordinate it.
