hello,

i have a question for you dreamcast people out there. i just bought a dreamcast, but i do not have a memory card. my friend tells me that i will need a memory card if i want to play any of the sports games. i've read somewhere that the sega memory cards don't hold that much, and i've been seeing 3rd party 4x dreamcast memory cards on ebay. what do you guys think about them? do they suck? reason i ask was becuz i've heard that 3rd party memory cards for PS2 are not as reliable as the sony ones. does the same hold true for dreamcast memory cards? also, whats a good place to buy a memory card (either sega or 3rd party)? i know where to get computer parts and all, but when it comes to video game accessories, i'm totally out of the loop (been out since sega genesis days) :p thanx!

I've got a generic 4X memory card that I bought awhile back. It has always worked well for me. Strangely enough, there are a few games that wont save with the standard Sega 4x card, but those problems don't exist on generic ones.

In case it helps, the one I use is green (although other colors were available, if I'm not mistaken). There is a button the side and a red and green led near the end so you can see which of the four cards you are on. I bought it at Babbages for around $20, but it's not on their website.

But heck, the Sega cards are only $10 now. I'd probably just pick up a couple of those...so you have a screen and an easy way to tell what is on there.

I will take your question with:

TEH MOST ULTAMATE DC MEM-FAQ. EVAR.

So you wanna get your greasy little mitts on a DC memory card? Well, you are in LUCK, b/c most video game stores are trying to get thier stck clear so they can load up on other systems and stuff. So you've got two questions:

-What kind of card do you want?
-Where can I get one?

The first question is VERY simple. You want to get a SEGA brand VMU! why? B/c they will NOT screw up. Period. Third party memcards genrally aren't of the same quality, b/c the third parties usually aren't licensed and have to reverse-engineer Sega stuff to make a working solution. This leaves room for bugs. Frankly, when you are 81-0 in an NBA2K2 season, and your memcard save corrupts on a third party card, YOU WILL CRY, and Sega will LAUGH. Don't let that happen; get a Sega card. Sega also makes a 4X memory card, so no need to worry about size either...the only third party card I can recommend is the Nexus card, which can also connect to your PC...those are pretty good, and can be found in a mom-and-pop store...

As for pricing and where you can get one, regular cards should be $9.99 NEW, and $5 USED. Go get it at a Best Buy, Software Etc., Electronics Boutique, Funcoland, or your local mom-and-pop VG store. If you live in NYC like I do, get to Chinatown, and go to Game Express, J and L Gaming, or the 5 or six other stores in that area...I'll give directions if ya need em...

:D I'll take my ten rating now...

I have the Sega 4X memory card and the only thing you don't get is the screen and two tiny buttons to play the mini games. I never played them anyway because the internal battery in the VMU dies very quickly. The memory portion doesn't need the battery because it gets power from the controller. Go with the 4X for most capability. Go official Sega only though, no clone or third party.

you do not need the memory cards to play sports games, or any games, but they are so cheap so what the heck, but they are helpful, like the VMU(Visual memory unit it has a little screen) in NBA 2Kx they show how tired the guys are, and it says slam dunk and stuff when you do it, in silent scope it shows you what is in the scope, but it is useless because you cant see anything clearly, in NFL @Kx it shows you the plays so the other person cant see what your doing, in virtua tennis it shows you the court and little stick people and the ball so um.... you dont have to look at the TV I guess.
