Question about Domain registration...

Okay, I have some webspace on my school's server, but i want to get a separate domain name and do a redirect page. I was thinking about using GoDaddy ( unless someone knows of a cheaper route)--my question is, do i still need to have DNS addresses to utilize the domain name, or is it not necessary for a simple redirect?
