i know with my 27" tube if I put my speakers next to my tv, even within like a foot, it distorts the picture on the tv from the magnet in the speakers, even though when i purchased them it said the speakers had the cover around the magnets. however my question is, does this happen with projection, particularly DLP, TV's? i am wondering because I'm going to pick mine up today and if they can't be too close to the speakers, I am going to have to redo my basement setup in order to make room for it, which I had planned on doing just not today.

plz lemme know if you know about this, thanks :)

I can't answer your question as to whether the speakers will affect DLP or not. However, if you do experience issues after getting your new set home, there is still a very cheap alternative as opposed to redoing your basement viewing area.

Pick up some bucking magnets from Parts Express to add to your woofers: Parts Express - use the search term "bucking magnets" to find what you need.

DLP and LCD are not affected by speaker magnets the way a CRT is.

Which TV did you get?

well the thing is it is going to be like probably closer than 6" on each side of the TV, so i want to make sure it won't have damage to the TV before i actually leave it sitting there. the guy in BB (i actually purchased it from CC though) i asked him about it, and he was like 'oh yea, it is just like CRT TV's it can mess it up blah blah blah' ... and i knew, before i even asked him, that it had little to no effect, i just wanted to ask him to see what he said. god i hate BB ...

anyways, i picked up the samsung 50" DLP from circuit city last night in Tysons Corner, VA (my gf works in the mall), however I am picking it up this morning at the CC right near my house since they didnt have any in stock at the one there :) I'm excited, waiting for my brother to call me with his pickup truck :)

Purbeast0, Didn't realize you were local to the DC area. I just spotted a great receiver deal, if you are in the market for something excellent at a great price. The 1014 is on par with the Elite 52TX. I have the 54TX by Pioneer Elite, and it is an outstanding deal. However, I paid well over 2x what the 1014 is being sold for by this guy.

DLP uses filtered light to project light on an internal screen, ie the P in DLP....okay, not really as it stands for processing, but you get the picture ;)

CRT's, or Cathode Ray tubes, use electron guns which project electrons onto a screen of phosphorus "phosphors." This takes place in the "tube," a nice hollow area that has a vacum (no air) insdie your TV. Think of it as a "super mega ultra TV show laser."

Because most speakers are "unsheilded," they have not been customized to cotain their interference. Because they have massive magnets inside, as that is what most speakers use to function, they also emit a magnetic feild outside of the speaker to the sides and such.

When you unsheilded speakers near the Cathode Ray tube, the magnetic field, wit ha certain charge, interacts with objects such as metal, and in this case, the electrons fired from the elctron gun. They either gravitate towards it or away from it depending on the charge/position of the magnet, which cause all of those "hallucinagenic" colors that appear on your screen.

thanks for the info guys.

and tiles2tech, i actually have a pretty good yamaha receiver right now, although recently it seems to be cutting off on its own when it gets too much sound trying to come out of it. like when i was playing halo 2 w/my 5.1 on, when alot of sounds came on screen and alot of bass, it cut off. any idea what may be causing this?

The short answer is no, the speakers won't affect your DLP TV. I have one, with my speakers right next to it...no problem. Couldn't do that when I had a 35" CRT.

Any number of things could be causing it.

- Speakers: 6 Ohm or 4 Ohm speakers could be pushing the receiver too hard. Plus, if you have 4/6 Ohm speakers, I believe Yamaha has a 6/8 Ohm switch on the back that you should adjust accordingly.

- Heat: Ensure your receiver has enough ventalation.

- Clipping: You might be pushing your receiver to the level of high distortion - causing it to cut out on you.
