Question about Dixiesys / Webhosting / E-mail

I'm looking for a webhosting company, and people seem to be satisfied with Dixie sys.

I visited their website, and it says they support webmail, and I was wondering about this. I use a lot of different computers (home, laptop, work, etc) and I need my mail to be in a centralized location (i.e. not downloaded by outlook to a specific computer) so I can get to previous e-mails to reply and read and stuff (I rarely use an address book, I just reply to e-mails people have sent me). I also send large word documents (sometimes close to 3 megs) through e-mail. So, my question is twofold, I guess:

1. Does the Dixiesys webmail support this? Does it have a nice interface and stuff? Does it look just like Hotmail or something? And what size files can it support as attachments?

2. Are there better ways of doing this? Normally, I just use Pine and my academic e-mail account. So, I just search my inbox (which has over 3000 messages) for the last e-mail written by whoever I want to right, and reply to that. I FTP files to my small shell space, and attach them that way (I actually do have a couple of people in my address book, so I can just alias them in the to field). It's major kluge, but the point is, I can get to my e-mail from any computer, and don't have to worry about something that I need to reply to being downloaded to my laptop when I'm at work. Are there better ways of doing this?

Ok, this seems like a simple question, but it's gotten sorta wordy. Hopefully you all can understand my issue here.

Thanks for the help!

My site (hosted by dixiesys) uses an interface called squirrel mail. I think it's tacky looking so I just use outlook.

The default is IMP, and isn't great. But they're planning to upgrade that or you can install Squirrelmail. Or just use pop access.

Uhhh...well, the Squirrel mail thing looks interesting.

Is it easy to install?

But I'm not really worried about the actual webhosting, I'm sure that's fine. And as I mentioned originally, I can't really use outlook, since I need my mail to be in a centralized location, accessable anywhere.

So, I guess they have webmail, but it's sorta janky, but you can install this thing that makes it better then?

Anyone have a hosting company that has this sort of thing already installed?

Yeah that's right. The default one isn't THAT bad, but it doesn't have a sent mail folder, and when you delete messages you have to expunge them after you delete them.

Squirrel mail is very easy to install, wont take you longer than 10 minutes. The default interface is fine, you might settle with it after trying :)

Am I missing something here? Squirrelmail came default with my site...

I use dixiesys and actually wondered last night where I can access my web mail from? I don't see any folders for any web mail in my site and I couldn't find any info on it at their web site.

Also, why not just have the email stay saved on the server so you can use POP3 from all of your computers and just have all of the mail on all of the computers?

if you're on a plesk server, it should be webmail.yourdomain.com.

and most likely, if you sign up now, you'll be put on a newer server with Ensim Webappliance that has Squirrelmail preinstalled instead of IMP 2.2.6 which are preinstalled on the Plesk servers.

#1: Squirrelmail is the interface on the new Ensim servers, people do seem to like it better than imp. Webmail uses IMAP so it leaves you "stuff" on the server, if you set your OTHER mail readers to ALSO use imap, you should have easy access to ALL your email no matter where you're at. If you use pop, you have to be careful and not download and delete your messages. Imap is really nice for people who don't always check mail from the same place.

#2: I'm not aware of an attachment limit, most likely webmail will limit you to the web server limit of 8 meg posts, but I'd have to investigate that to be positive. With webmail you should have the option to enable the sentmail folder as well to have access to mail you SENT from anywhere too (did I mention Imap is really nice for people on the run?).

If you have any further questions feel free to pop into our irc channel (server: irc.dixiesys.com channel #help) or post in our forums (forums.dixiesys.com) that way our staff will be able to answer your questions faster hopefully.

Thanks for your interest!

Well....jeez....

Thanks for the information!

Seems like that's what I'm looking for.

Now, if only I could get one of those 2 for 1 deals like they had in July (nudge nudge, wink wink).

You snooze, you lose is all I have to say ... you had every opportunity to sign up in July (I even had it plastered in my sig).

:D

Uhhh...right.

Except for the fact that I didn't need hosting in July. Nor did I want hosting in July.

I don't really need hosting now, either.

But I want hosting.

But, if i can't get a suitable deal, just as well...I'm going to have my current e-mail address for at least another 5 months (which is really the biggest reason I want hosting), so I'm sure something reasonable will come up between now and then.

<sarcasm> But seriously...it was plastered all over your sig, and I didn't hop on it? For shame...</sarcasm>

That's alright I'll let it slide this time ;)

If it's any consolation the next time Gary has a 2-for-1 special it will AGAIN be in my sig.
