Question about DivX encoding in Flask

I've been using Flask version 0.594 for a while and decided to try version 0.6. One big difference I noticed is that version 0.6 doesn't allow you to select the bit rate for encoding. What bit rate is the movie being encoded at and is there a way to change it?

Are you sure about that??? I thought it did...in output format option when you pick low motion or fast motion double click it and it will open sub-menu...otherwise default for low motion will be 910 bitrate...


I use 0.594 still cause the 0.60 preview (which may have been updated) seemed rather buggy...The only thing I like about the 0.60 version is being able to pick start and begin of encoding with slider bar and audio player function...

 
You're right, I'm a dumbass. I didn't see that you had to double click it to get the configuration settings. 😱
 
Flask is the worst program to encode divx in that I know of. If you want something easy that's much better try dvd2avi/vfapi/virtual dub. If you want to be elite then learn nandub. There are guides and software at Doom9.net
 
I agree with you there madthumbs.....well to a certain extent anyway. I've actually gotten some movies to look really good using Flask like the Ferrari vs. Hummer chase in The Rock, but a lot of other movies have looked like crap after I Flasked them even with all settings on high. I've just been using it because I'm still relatively new to this stuff and Flask is by far the easiest program to use. I've read a lot of the guides on Doom9 and DivX-Digest and they're a lot of help. I've gotten pretty good results with Mpeg2AVI and even GraphEdit. What do you think of those two programs? I've also tried DVD2AVI and Nandub once but didn't fiddle with them that much so my results weren't great. You can use VirtualDub to do VOB to DivX encoding? I didn't know that.
 
well if you use flask program than you have check the deinterlace and set the threshold between 1 to 5 if you don't check that one you will get bad turn out.I have using flask program alot and most of my movie come out supper. well for me the most easy program every use and excellent and quicker than flask is vidomy program here is the link to vidomi web siteVIDOMI
 
I used DVD decrypter to get the DVD's off the DVD and onto my HD in .IFO and .VOB format. But Virtual dub can't read. Grrr.
 
dingdong, I've tried the deinterlacing option and it didn't seem to help. Correct me if I'm wrong, but interlacing artifacts are those horizontal lines you get across the screen right? I didn't have a problem with those, but some of Flask movies turned out blocky and they played choppy.

But first a Q. When ripping a CD, as long as you rip without errors, a rip is a rip. The wave is the same in all cases. Is this also true with DVD's into VOB files, or does the ripper do something higher tech than copying the file bit for bit?
 
I'm thinking the same thing you are TunaBoo, but I don't know if that's the truth. Anyone know? But then again, when ripping CDs, there can sometimes be small differences between the quality of the rip depending on how good the drive is, specifically light clicking noises during playback.
 
And how do I straight out play VOB files? Any way to watch them to see the quality besides in flash (where u cant have video + sound at same time)
 
If you want to wath vob files alone and you don't have dvd software player than all you have to do is using window media . one thing window media 6.4 allow to forward but not the crap window 7 and up
 
I had a similiar post not long ago and was recomended to use fair use. I've been really happy with the picture quality and how truly easy the program is. Fair Use encodes 4 streams at one time (you can change the number of streams though). By default it does 1 HQ Fast Motion and 3 low motions of different quality and then puts them in to the best movie given your size requirements. It is very accurate at encoding to a specific size too. So far its always been within 1-2 megabytes. Be warned, it takes forever to encode a movie. You might want to give it a shot though.

Going the virtual dub way isnt better?
 
I've heard good things about Fair Use, if you want something that is a hell of a lot better/ faster than Flask, and simple then learn the DVD2avi/ vfapi/ Virtual Dub method of encoding.

Use FairUse if you want better compression/ results and don't mind the encoding time and want something very simple.

If you want to be 133+ then use nandub. If you want a newbie program that will help you get started with nandub, then learn the Virtual Dub method above as nandub is just a hack of Virtual Dub. If you value quality over file size then also consider 2cd encodes using the original ac3 sound. (Use the ac3-pack/ Virtual Dub w/ ac3 from www.doom9.net).

Flask is a total waste of time. It does a piss poor job of encoding, has horrible filtering options/ filters, is slow, buggy, etc... People say it is a &quot;newbie&quot; program, but a newbie program should point you in a good direction. Flask is different from any good program I know of and most of the learning you do in Flask is a waste of time because of that. A good direction if you want to take it slow is the dvd2avi/ vfapi/ V_dub method, then graduate to the nandub method. Nandub supports Ac3 encoding very well.... better than the V_dub with ac3!
 
On another note, if you're not encoding with nandub, you should consider using mpeg4v2 instead of divx. This is because mpeg4v2 seems to have lower DRF (detail removal) values and produces more detailed results. Mpeg4v2 is especially better for 2-3 disk encodes. Nandub allows you to manipulate the internal DRF values for divx making it look comparable to mpeg4v2. Before nandub divx sucked for quality encoding.
