Question about Divx and vcd !

Ok, I´m trying to compress few vcd's I have on my hd. Anyway when I got them I usualy just copied the .dat file from the cd to my hd. Now I´m using flaskmpeg to compress them to divx and when I open up the files nothing happens, with files that I got as mpeg files instead of .dat files it works but not with former .dat files.

Is there realy some difference between .dat and .mpg ??

What can i do to convert it .. or something
 
*.dat and *.mpg are the same except for the header information... I think.

Anyway, you can get vcdgear which will convert the *.dat to *.mpg. Then you'll be able to go about your usual way of converting it to DivX.
