Question about display modes

Hello,

I just purchased a new KDS AV-21TF (21" with FD-trinitron tube) and I LOVE this baby! ($750 from outpost.com shipped free overnight)

I've got it connected to a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000, and I ran into something odd:

Currently I'm running at 1600x1200@75Hz and the picture quality is great. However, when I try to boost the refresh rate to 80 Hz, the picture gets AWFUL, grainy, and fuzzy.

Have I reached the non-interlaced limit of the Voodoo3 3000? I know it supposedly supports 1600 by 1200 at 85 Hz, but is this only in interlaced mode or something?

Thanks for any pointers/help!

The higher the refresh rate, the more you are pushing the monitor/graphics card.

Without knowing the max res/refresh rate of that monitor I can only suggest that 1600x1200@75Hz is your limit.

The monitor does 1600x1200 all the way up to 100Hz, according to the manual and website.

I don't play video games... so I really don't need a 3d card. But I want a damned good 2d card, that does incredible 2d resolution... any suggestions?

From what I hear (and have seen myself) Matrox cards (any) are the undisputed King of 2D. Followed probably by the ATI Radeon.

You've probably hit the limit of your video card in terms of producing acceptable output at certain refresh rates.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Radeon 2d output. If you need good 2d (along with pretty darn good 3d), I'd look at the Radeon.
