My mother wants to get the local channels but she has been taping her soaps from the antenna for the past few years. She wants to know if we'd be able to tape her soaps through the dish now if we get the local channels and how we would go about doing it.
DTV is just a source, just like the air channels are, just have the output from the direcTV go to the in put of the VCR and the output of the VCR to the input of the TV.
get the directTV dvr. i have dishnetwork w/ local channels and DVR and I can record just fine. if your mom specifically wants to record onto VHS, then you just set the vcr to record off whatever channel your installation sets your TV to.
but if you ask me, your mom should ditch cassette and just use the DVR, this thing is awesome.

Or just have one output of the DTV box go to the VCR, and another go to the TV. However, understand that she will HAVE to have the DTV box on that channel when the VCR starts recording.
A better bet would be to get her DirecTivo. MUCH easier than a VCR. And they are dirt cheap nowadays.
