Question about Die Hard 2

NFS4

No Lifer
OK, yesterday Die Hard 2 was on cable (I haven't seen the movie in at least 10 or 11 years) and I was trying to follow it. From what I can remember, there are a bunch of planes circling the airport and running low on fuel b/c the terrrrrrrrrrrrists have taken control of everything.

Question...couldn't they just fly to another airport?

Actually what they should do is land anywhere they can (street, highway, field, etc.) if terrorists ever take over an airport. One time on a trip back from Texas our plane couldn't land (b/c of fog) so we circled for a few hours waiting for it to clear then when we started to run low on fuel we landed at the nearest airport and had to stay the night (by the time we landed it was like 3 in the morning), and fly back home the next morning at 7. What a trip.

Assume that the planes are too heavy to land at a "local" airport and there are no other international airports within range of what little fuel the have left.

Which is kind of silly when you think about it because they were circling over Dulles airport just outside of D.C.

Reagan National and B.W.I. are within 30-40 miles of Dulles.

There was a storm and it was at night. They didn't have enough fuel to fly to another airport, and they needed landing lights to guide their way down.

The fuel excuse doesn't really work since most of the planes were circling for what seemed like an hour or two.

aircraft have to carry enough fuel to go to their intended destination, then to an alternate airport, then 45 minutes of cruise flight. the technical errors and impossibilities in that movie are egregious but it's still a good flick 🙂

Yeah, at one point, someone tells Bruce Willis that his wife's plane only has 90 minutes of fuel left.

I think the main thing wasn't the weather, it was that the ATC stuff at the airport was shut down by the main bad-guy, so they couldn't tell them to divert to another airport. When they finally figured out they could send a messege with the outer beacon, most of the planes left were still really low on fuel.

And why did they worry about stopping that jet full of bad guys again? Seems pretty simple to me, let it take off, get over a low-population area, scramble a couple fighters and shoot it down.

It's weird that Die Hard 2 was just on this weekend. Last week I was telling one of my friends that I thought Die Hard 2 was the best of the trilogy - I guess it's been a while since I've seen it, because Die Hard was FAR superior.

For some reason I just really don't like DH2.

The planes up there didn't know that the terrorists had control of the tower. They thought they were just waiting for things to clear, then they would be called to land. By the time they knew that terrorists were in control, it was too late to go to another airport.
