Question about Dewalt cordless drill

I don't have the instruction manual for the drill and I wanted to know what the switch for 1 and 2 on top of the drill was for. Just flicking it back and forth, I didn't seem to notice a difference in performance.

The one on the top of my 14.4V Dewalt changes the speed of the drill. One is for screwdriver and turns slower, the other is for drilling and turns the faster.

Same thing with mine, it changes the speed of the drill.

I do have a Makita drill that has a switch that changes it back and forth from a hammer drill to a regular drill. You can't tell the difference between the two until you actually try to drill something. It's much noisier and of course it vibrates when using the hammer drill.
