question about depositing money into my bank account....

Diamond Member
my dad decided that he is going to help me out with money from time to time and deposit money into my bank

he doesn't live near me...

my question is, what does he need to deposit money into my bank account?

i gave him my account number that is on my card... is that all he needs to make a deposit?

I'm not really sure about this since i've always used the ATM to deposit money. thanks

He will need the account number and the routing number and I think you might have to set up something with your bank to allow it.

No permission should be necessary as long as he is only doing deposits.

all i needed was the account number... but then again... whoever i had to give money to always had the same bank i did

How can he make deposits if he doesn't have an account with your bank?

I wonder if ACH is a solution, that would be quickest, easiest and cheapest.

Ask the tellers (or the CSRs at your dad's bank's 800 number) if they can set up an automatic ACH transfer into your bank account. If I'm not mistaken, ACH transfers are from an account at one bank to an account at another. They'll need the info that's on a check of yours (routing # and acct. #).

Your father can write a check in your name, goto a branch of your bank with the routing number and bank account number and deposit the amount into your account. The routing number may not be necessary (it was in Canada), but I am not so sure about the States. In Canada, the routing number was to identify a particular branch.

That could work depending on how their interstate banking system is setup, it's not as always as easy as it sounds.

i would have him join your account as like a secondary. That way he can easily transfer funds from his main account into yours. BofA lets you do it online as well. That is how I'm set up with my dad. You will get charged for wire transfers, this is free.

today was my last day of work at the bank, yay

i work at a bank and as long as he goes to the same bank with the account #, he should have no problem. They usually wont give out the account # to him though. He will have no problem putting money in, just taking it out.
