Question about deleting files and the trash can

I have 3 basic storage drives in use at all times... a 1TB internal, a 500GB external, and a 500GB portable, both connected via USB3.0. With the exception of the internal drive, data is basically replicated across the 3 drives, more or less manually.

Why is it when I delete old or redundant files in the external drives, some show up in the trash can and some do not? Example: I use Acronis to create a backup image of my OS and email every night, and then go in the next day and delete the superseded copy. When I delete the smaller email file on the internal drive, it shows up in the trash can to be deleted later, neither of the email files show up in the trash can when I delete them off the external drives, but when I delete most any other sort of file off the externals, they show up in the can. What gives?

Is this because there is one trashcan to represent all the many drives? I still don't get how the trashcan works regarding multiple drives and swapping drives in and out...

File size. If the file to be deleted too large to fit in the trash can it isn't sent there.

Also, is there any chance you are holding down the shift key while deleting? That bypasses the trash can.

No, and no. Of the two Acronis files, the OS image is too big to fit in the can (135GB) and tells me it's deleting it outright, but not so with the email image, only around 600MB.

Yes... most anything off any of the drives deleted winds up in the one trash can. When I open the trash can up, I can hear my external drive spool up (if it's sleeping) so the system can, I'm assuming, search for items that it placed in the trash can (whether or not that drive has anything in the deleted file at that time.)

All the trash can is, is a final safety net for deleted files... it allows me one last chance to NOT delete something. But I'm still curious as to why some things go there and some do not (size not being an issue as Phynaz pointed out.) Maybe file type?
