question about ddr compatibility

what are some possible problems i might encouter if i use ram that is not tested and approved by the manufacturer of my motherboard? i bought a stick of kingston 256 mb pc2700 ddr ram and realized afterwards that it was kingmax, not kingston that was compatible. should i go ahead and try to give the kingston a spin?

not compatable how? As long as it's the same pin layout and everything it WILL be just fine.

PC2100 boards can take PC2700/PC3200/PC3500 etc just getting the board to run at those speeds is another matter.

However...you may be thinking about ECC memory or registered memory. ECC memory is ONLY compatable with a limited number of mobos.

Generic memory PC2700 from Corsair, Kingston, Kingmax, Geil, Samsung etc etc etc is just fine in about any DDR mobo around.

on my mobo's website it gives a list of "tested and approved" pc2700 ddr ram i have an asus a7s333 mobo. but you are saying there should be no problem? i was leaning that way but was wondering if anyone knew anything concrete

Just because it is not tested and approved does not mean it will not work. It should work just fine. Try it out, and if it doesn't work, just exhange it for Kingston memory. However, you will be happy you got the Kingmax memory. It uses some interesting technology that helps maintain signal integtiry. Also, the DIMMs are nice and compact in terms of height.
