OK, I am wanting to upgrade to a better CPU but I am limited on cash.
I currently have an AMD XP 2800+ running at 380 FSB, i have memory (with TCCD) that is PC3200 400Mhz but will not run at that because of CPU.
I read alot of different threads and it would be smart to down grade to an 2500+ M? I heard poeple getting 400Mhz +. I just want my memory to run at 400 Mhz or would it be better to upgrade to an AMD XP 3200+ or 3000+ (400Mhz)?

Thank you.

Let me know if y'all need more info.

PM me if need be.

TCCD isn't really made for AXPs, it shines with the K8s though. If I were you, I wouldn't bother getting a mobile barton, they've gotten a bit expensive. Upgrading to 939, imho would be a better idea.

I would like to do that but I am limited to about $100 or less. Going to have a baby soon and need to save cash for the baby...

You want your RAM at 400 MHz and it won't do it?
Dude, even if you could speed up your RAM, you know what the real world difference is?
You'd be better off with a new processor except in your case, there's almost no point.
You have an XP 2800+ when the 3200+ is not that much more powerful (10% more).
And having faster RAM would maybe be another 10%.

I went from a Duron 1.8 GHz to an Athlon 64 3400+ (2.4 GHz) and I can tell you THAT was a huge upgrade. Yours won't make that much of a difference.

It's a tough choice really. You have a tight budget yet you'll need an PCI-E slot for the future. So, new mobo/cpu/video card would cost you $$$.
The cheapest I can think of would be something like Abit KV8 Pro (so you could still use AGP) and Sempron 3100+. That would be like $189 US at monarch computer but it's like 15% improvement. In other words, you're looking at an Athlon 3400+ like mine or better (about 50% faster than yours and 100%, or double the performance of the Duron 1.8 GHz).

\EDIT: Of course, I'm basing my opinions on the UT2004 benchmark here:

If you're having a baby that you need to save money for, keep the $100 and spend it on your child.

First of all I already have a savings setup for the kid...
Second I sold some stuff to buy a cpu for around $100.00

So I decided to get an AMD XP 3200 till I get ready for my next Upgrade!

Thank you plus lock.

would be a waste buying a 3200xp when u already have a 2800, increase of what? 120-140 mhz + running it at 400fsb? overclock it, lower the mult to 11 and set the ram at 200 and there u go 3200xp speeds

you're not going to even notice a difference going from a 2800+ to a 3200+. Can your mobo handle a 200mhz fsb? some of the earlier sktA chipsets wouldnt run 200mhz stably. Really the only place youre going to see a difference will be in benchmarks, but not in using the computer yourself. I would have saved the $100, waited a bit and saved another $100 to perform a better upgrade.

Thanks for the advise and I see what I can do, thank you again.

I played around with the 2800+ and I got it runing at where I want it and it is stable, I ran the prime95 and it is all good. thank you.
