I'm considering picking up one of these boards(they're really cheap). They are slot 1 intel boards with the i820 chipset. I can pick-up just a little (64-128mb) of RDRAM for it. It's came down in price some (a good bit actually). The only problem is that it's for a spare system which I don't want to drop the cash for a P3 on. It specifically states that it doesn't support the 66mhz bus so most celerons are out, but what about the 100mhz bus Celerons (800 and 850's), and more specifically the 700mhz Via C3 (100mhz bus, and a lot cheapwe then the celery's). Please refrain from bashing the Via b/c of performance. I'm well aware of the numbers. I just want to know if it would work in this board (in a slocket naturally).

OH HELL NO...do not get anything with an 820 chipset. they're so cheap because no one wants them. they made rdram look like the isht they are now. performace out of a p3/rdram was usually lower than a BX with a p3/sdram...and that's just not because the p3 can't use the bandwith...it's because the 820 just sucks. go look it up at tomshardware.com.

I'm not extremely concerned with the performance factor. Moreso the will it work factor.

Somebody? Please :). I've heard these things are stable as they come. Via's C3 is also based on an IDT core which classically those have been slow but the most stable chips around. It would make a great combo for a Linux box that'll be on 24/7. Think it'll work? Again, not worried about performance. This thing will be remote accessed an sitting in text mode all day. I want cheapness and ultimate stability. (mostly cheapness though)

I have a Dell XPS 600b, which is a PIII 600EB on a VC 820 using 128 pc700 (need to pick another now that they are semi-affordable) , and it has been great. Totally crushes my friends P iii 500 on a BX. (Coppermine probably has a lot to do with that). But it is very stable. Even on Win 98, there is nary a blue screen.
