I know this company locally who produce DVDS and they use music such as Jay-Z, Ja Rule, all kinda copyrighted music. They are selling these DVDS to make a profit. Is it illegal to use this music without the proper permission from the recording industry/and the artists? Wouldn't the RIAA want a piece of the pie they are making?

Can anyone answer this? Thanks.

It's not legal, you're supposed to pay license fees to use the music.

absolutely illegal. Although there is a mandatory licensing scheme, that the Statute provides for.

I'm actually in the process of finding out if they do have permission. But from the looks of it, I doubt it.

Don't they usually ahve to pay some type of fee or give some of the profit to them?

They have to have a "license" , which is granted by the copyright holder.
This fee is paid to that person(s) or their agent (publishing company, usually).
The RIAA will pay you a bunch of money if you are the one that leads them to a multi Burner/ Printer set-up.

They can license the music thru ASCAP or BMI.
