Question about connecting a new computer to an existing router & home network

Hey, Guys,

A friend of mine has decided to buy a new PC. She has her current PC (the one she's replacing) connected to a Netgear router and DSL modem. She also has an ethernet cable connected to the router that she uses to connect her laptop to when she wants to share files (thru the router) between her PC and laptop. A simple home network setup, in other words.

She asked if I could set up her network for her when she brings the new PC home today. I know zero about networking, so what's involved here? Do I need to reinstall the router's software onto the new PC's hard drive and then "configure" it, or can I just plug the new PC into the router and be off & running (maybe after just turning the router off & on)? What will I need to do?

I posted another question on this forum a few days ago about doing file sharing and got some helpful answers (thanks, amdskip and kevnich 2  ), so hopefully once I get the network itself set up, I'll be able to set up file sharing between the laptop and PC again. Right now, though, I need to know about getting the router & DSL modem working with the new PC itself first.

I'm starting with no knowledge about networking here, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Ken

EDIT: The new PC will have Vista, I think, if that matters.

The Router software is actually Not necessary even for the first computer, it is just as easy to learn few basic network concept and configure manually.

You can start by just plugging the new computer to the Router.

If it does not connect as is check the Network settings of the new computer.
