Question about computer security, in case it gets stolen.

I was wondering if there was a secure way to protect my hard drives from being accessed in case my home desktop computer was stolen because there is quite a bit of information that I would rather a thief not have. I am wondering if there is some crazy password protection program or something. Thanks
