on Easter Sunday I got called in to work to make some repairs. I was called at around 5AM and made the repairs and was home by 7. Anyways, I requested approval to receive 8hrs comp time for this, reasons being:
1) Minimum for any off-hours call in is 4hrs.
2) Any Sunday or holiday is paid double time.
3) no overtime pay is authorized - only comp time

Today I got an email from my boss denying approval for the comp time, and he only approved me for 2hrs. He said Easter Sunday is not a federal holiday so it isn't considered a holiday at our company, and they are now only doing comp time in 2hr chunks. I replied with something along the lines of "That is fine, however, in the future I will have to re-evaluate my priorities when I am called in on an emergency". I won't receive a response to this until Tuesday.

is this the norm, or did I just get screwed? Also, do you think I will get fired due to my response to my boss?

I don't think there are any specific laws on it, but most companies pay better than that for such a thing. Sounds like your boss is trying to screw you.

Ok, even with 2 hours chunks, it was still a sunday so shouldn't the double time still applyh (e.g. paid for the equivalent of 4 hours)?

I work at a banquet center and, although I didn't work on Easter sunday (I was out of town), my friends told me that they all got paid 12 and hour instead of the regular 7 or 8. You got screwed buddy.

I hate the fact that I got up at 5AM to go in for compensation of 2hrs......sadly, its not the first time I've been screwed on comp time.

You got it up the pooper. But technically, Easter isn't a national holiday.

But, it's still a Sunday. According to the OP, the pay is doubled on Sundays and holidays.

Sounds like BS to me. Does he have it in writing of all these changes? I think you did the right thing... but you're probably gonna get your ass canned! But i would have done the same thing too.

Yout got screwed. That being said, my last employer was the exact same way. I'd gotten approved time-off for a Friday before a holiday and posted that I would return on the following Monday. Saturday morning I received a call saying that there was an emergency at the office and that I needed to come right in. Silly me, I thought there was an *actual* emergency, like a fire in the server room or something. Actually what happened was the company hired a handy-man (not an electrician) to do some wiring work, and he cut through several cat 5 runs to user workstations. I told them that it wasn't mission critical and that I was going home to enjoy my holiday but I was told that it *must* be fixed by Monday morning.

Long story short, I fixed the cabling, got paid only for the hours that I worked (no holiday time as the office was not scheduled to be open that day) I quit about a month later to focus on my company and haven't looked back :)
