question about comcast digital cable service

I'm going to be ordering digital cable service through Comcast in Northern CA (Fresno). Do I have the ability to purchase the digital set top boxes ouright instead of renting from the for $5/each? eBay has several auctions for the Motorola and General Instrument that say they will work with Comcast. When I called Comcast about this, they said that the $5/box covers the "signal" for each room? Is this true or just BS so that I will waste $5/box? Anybody have any experience (good or bad) with Comcast in Northern California?

what they probably meant was that for each room you want digital cable service in, you'll need a digital box @ $5/month rental charge on each. So if you have 3 rooms with digital cable service, then it'll be $15 extra per month ($10 if the first box is included in the monthly bill) in addition to the normal subscription charge.

However, the setup I have is just the living room has digital cable service, but the other 4 tv's all have regular analog service, which doesnt require extra boxes or anything, but also doens't get the extra channels offered by digital service.

Yea, thats what I was thinking. I just find it hard to believe that the $5 rental charge is for "service" for each room rather than the rental of the actual box. When we getting the premium channels for non-digital cable, I could move the cable box from room-to-room to get HBO and showtime.

bought two of those boxes from eBay... and it doesn't work. one of them i bought locally... hoping that it will give a better chance of working but it didn't work either. i'm guessing you're going to have to call comcast to get one registered... but they'll give you this look like you got it illegally since these things are generally not for sale. blah. i gave up on it.
