okay... i was thinking about this the other day, and i just saw a commercial that remind me....

the civic hybrid gets about 46/51 mpg... pretty good with a gas/electric motor. I'm guessing the Horsepower sucks.. probably like 90 or so. Anybody know what this costs or what kind of supply they have of them? i've never seen one at a dealership.

and another thing-- doesnt the VW TDI get just as good fuel economy, with more power-- and i'm probably guessing that its cheaper?

how do the emmisions differ between these 2 engines?

edit.. and no, i'm not looking for a new car... i was just curious about this.

You're right, it's 93 HP according to the kelly blue book page here. They don't list emmissions though (and note that the pricing figures is for Toledo, OH)

Also, if you check KBB.com, the TDI is about $1000 more in a 2dr hatchback Golf

The TDI is inherently more dirty then the Civic Hybrid. Diesels just are not as clean as a gasoline motor, period. The whole point of the hybrid model is to lower emissions. Currently, the Honda/Toyota hybrids are the cleanest internal combustion cars you can buy, period.
For power, VW specs the TDI to 90 horses as well, but with 155 ft-lbs torque vs. 116 for the Civic. I venture to say that the torque will make the TDI seem quicker, but both cars are about the same performance wise. Finally, gas is cheaper the diesel, at least where I am.

I thought that was a myth - I believe that the TDI VWs produce less emisions than a gas counterpart.

The hybrid gets somewhat better highway milage than the TDI but much better city. Of course it will feel slower because its torque sucks. It's also small and dinky compared to a TDI.

Diesel can be cheaper or more expensive than gas depending on area...maybe some people just don't like diesel.

you can't compare diesel gallons to gas gallons. the energy per gallon for diesel is more. then again the problems with diesel .. such as emitting particles that are dangerous cuz they can lodge deep in lungs, sticky gross fuel... get it on ur shoes and ur carpet etc:p
