Question about cinema / movies

I don't know how to word it to search for information, but I've always wondered why that bloody circle always appears on films in the movies / on some dvd's, in the top right hand corner of the picture.

It's like a black oval shaped circle with a greenish / yellowish outline, I was watching a film last night and all I could think about was that bloody circle :|

Anyone care to fill me in?

😕

Signifies reel changes. Movies come in pieces on 2000 foot reels to be connected together at the theatre. The dots were placed at the very end of reel changes when you would have to load every reel individually, first dot to start the projector, second dot to open the arpeture. This is no longer used as theatres have now moved to platter systems where the movie is taped together all at once and placed on big platters.
