Question about Cell Phones.

I am wondering what it typically means when you call a cell phone and it only rings. If it rings indefinitely and a voice mail system never picks up what is happwening. I am calling a cell phone that I knwo works, but only because usually when I call the person answers. I have tried to call this person a few times and it only rings. No mesasging system picks up. How many cell phones these days dont have a voice mail system automatically. This would defnintely be a new (purcahses this year) cell phone that uses eithher SunCom, Powertel or Cingular. Also, if this appears to be a flaw due to some odd occurence, like the phone being off, then what atre the oddds that the owner will receive indicators that I tried to call...like caller ID.

Any ideas ?

interesting. i dont know what it really means but it might mean that the phone is on but the serivce just sucks

beats me

It could be that the voice messaging system is down.

Do you think this would have any effect on the Caller ID service of the phone. Would the cell phone still register missed calls from my number ?

it means the person has caller ID, and doesn't want to answer knowing it's you. 🙂 j/k

I have no idea, maybe the phone is off.

Would being in a no service area keep a phone from registering calls ?

I think that is what happens with my phone. But when I am out of service area I think my Voice Mail still picks up, though I will not have any calls registered with the Caller ID>

Capn: thank you for openly indicated my clear, obvious, primary fear.

Basically this girl gave me her number, said to call her. I did...no answer...no voice mail...just rings forever. I dont want to keep calling if she is avoiding me, but I am not sure if she even know I called.

Quite a dillema!

depends on the company....i have pacbell. i can usually tell what the problem is.

1-2 rings then VM, out of service
4-5 rings and no answer...away from phone (or they dont want to talk to you)
any number of rings then it gets cut off, you got hung up on.

btw, if no VM picks up...then their system (the cell co's) is usually down or experiencing high call volume.

to be honest, it is really hard to say what the problem is. could be the connection, the service, the company, the phone, there are many factors involved. What I do know is that my phone tweaks as well. Here at work, when I leave my phone on, I only get 1 small frequency bar. One time, the phone just started beeping telling me that I have received a voice message. ????? But the phone did not ring, so that means that due to the connection, it simply just sent the called to my voice messaging service. So I conclude that my connection was the factor here.

In your case it can be the same thing, but diff scenario. know what i'm saying

tkim:

10 + rings...no VM (would continue to ring indefinitely)

Can a person disable the VM without answering ??

dannyLove: I have had the same issue with mine. Where I work I cannot get any signal. When I am driving home and enter the service range again all of a sudden I a made aqware of all the voice mail messages. Basically when my phone rings 5 times, regardless of service, it send it to voice mail. I would have to set my phone up NOT to use voice mial for the VM to never pick up.

btw, if no VM picks up...then their system (the cell co's) is usually down or experiencing high call volume.

tkim: how do you guess this would affect the Caller ID service of the phone. Do you think the owner would receive indicators of missed calls from me ?

On my phone I would not receive the missed calls or their numbers.

Ill just try calling her again. Who cares if she thinks i am a weirdo...if calling her too much makes me one, then I guess I am. I just hope either she, or the Vm picks up this time!

well, the info i provided is from my experience with pacbell/cingular.

from my experiences with other carriers, it could be that they didnt set up their Vm box. it has happened to my friend.

another answer could be that they are in an area where they go in and out of range. one sec thay get maybe 1 bar and the next second they get nothing. the system might be trying harder to find them but is having no luck.

It could either be that they didn't set up their VM box.
OR maybe they're forwarding the calls to another number - perhaps
a home phone without an answering machine. Call forwarding is
included with most plans these days.

So after all these posts, can anyone provide an opinion as to whether I should call this girl again or not ? I do not want to call if she has logged the other calls I made.
