Question about catalytic converter...

Okay, so I'm buying a new Magnaflow cat to be welded onto my car (directfit for Volvo is either expensive or crappy as far as I have found). Two questions:

1. Is the size important? It seems that smaller will flow better but will it have decreased life over a longer model?
2. Midas would be using an aluminum pipe to weld the cat onto a stainless steel exhaust line. Will this cause any problems in the long run?
