Question about carpet

Had a new house built about a year ago. The great room is huge, and when they laid the carpet I mentioned that I could see the seam. They said that they couldn't do the room all in one piece because of the size, and that after a little while the seam should disappear.

Well, it's been a year, and I can still see it plain as day. So my question is, if it was done right should I be able to see this seam? The carpet is a really low pile, if that makes a difference.

Thoughts?

because of it being low-pile id say yeah. you are more likely to see the seam. I guess it depends on how obvious the seam is.. or if its just something you know is there and see it right out. In a plush carpet you wont see the seam.

Yes...I am sure it depends on the quality of the carpet, and more importantly the quality of the install.

I've watched carpet people put in carpet before, and they used some sort of tool that was kind of like a wire-brush to "brush" the seam away. It was kinda cool.

Did they do that?

Low pile will tend to show more, but when you can see the seams, it usually is because the peices were not glued together close enough or might have shifted in the stretching process. Overall, I would think it is a minor aethetic problem. I have a similar spot in my house, I just tossed rug over it... helps out too since it is a high traffic spot...

No idea, since I wasn't present during the install. I'll try to snap a pic in a bit...

Why did people start calling their living room the "great room"? It sounds like something you'd find in a castle.

Well, it was more of a description move. More and more people aren't using the rooms for traditional "living room" stuff, but calling it a multi-purpose room seemed kinda weird...

No. If it is cut/ seamed properly and laid in the right direction you shouldn't see the seam inless you are looking really closely at it.

Quality of the carpet and the QUality of the installers determine if you see the seem. Ideally you should not be able to see it at all unless you know right where to look. But when people build houses they usually skimp everywhere they can so they probably just installed it as quickly as they could and got the hell out.

My brother has a carpet store and I used to watch the installers at work. It all depends on the skill of the installers. A really skilled installer should be able to match a seam on the crappiest carpet.
