Okay, I noticed on my car that the airbox is connected to the engine, obviously. But when I look at conical air intakes, I see that all it is is just a tube with a filter on the end, correct? What stops the user from just removing the stock hosing and just putting the filter up close without tubing? I know little about engines but I was just curious. Also, a friend of mine took off the tubing from the airbox to the engine so the intake was just straight to the engine... he tried starting his car, but failed. Why is that? (I was told that can fvck up your car but I was wondering how exactly)

any takers?

If there is a MAF sensor in line, you screw with the calibration by changing the dimensions of the housing.

just putting the filter without a tube defeats the purpose, which is to grab colder air away from the engine rather than air on top of the engine. Coler air is denser and means more power. If you do take off the filter box and do not connect the vacuum lines to anything, it wont start.

Okay, but why wouldn't then engine start with the hosing disconnected? (engine = not hot)

doesnt matter if it is hot, if there is no vacuum(those tubes running to the filter pipe) things wont work.
