Question about Canon A60

Does the Canon A60 have a webcam function? If yes, can it be used without a dock/cradle? The canon site does not mention it explicitly.

My friend's Fuji Finepix A205s can be used as a webcam by connecting it directly to the PC without the cradle. I am looking to buy a cheap 2.0MP camera ( less than $200) which can also be used with Yahoo messenger as a webcam.

Any other recommendations would be welcome. I was looking at the A205, but it uses expensive xD cards, and I would prefer a CF card based camera.

Thanks in advance.🙂

Honestly I wouldn't look for a combo camera if you want good quality pics. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that cameras that are combos are usually cheap and don't take that good of pictures.

So, the A60 is out.🙁

Any other recommendations?
If you want a webcam, get a webcam and still get the A60. It will take better pictures than the A205.

Decent webcams start at about 50$ retail. You'll have the best of both worlds.

The A205 is a decent camera for basic shooting...it has a 3x optical zoom too, but it is pathetic in low-light conditions. I've used my friend's A205 for a few days, and night shots are screwed up nearly all the time. Also, it has hardly any manual controls.

A 128MB xD card is something like $50 while a CF card is half that.

I might go for the A205 if nothing else turns up on my shortlist. Since I am on a limited budget, It is economically more attractive. 😀

I have to consider

A60 + 128MB CF + webcam = approx $(150+25+50) = $225
vs
A205 + 128MB xD = approx $(100+50) = $150

and their cost-to performance ratio.

Thanks for the input guys.

The A60 is able to be used as a webcam. Ripped from here

1) Download SoftCam http://www.softcam.com

2) Install SoftCam (damm!)

3) Connect the camera to PC and switch it to the Review mode (the same used to download the photos to PC)

4) Turn on the camera

5) Close any window that opened for downloading photos.

6) Open the RemoteCapture software and connect to the camera.

7) Expand the "Detail Setting" option

8) At the Angle Adjustment tab, click on the Viewfinder On option

Ok, at this point, you should be seeing the image from your camera

9) Open the SoftCam. At the main window, go to Options: Set it to Default
Live Video Source as "SoftCam Screen Capture". OK

10) Drag the button 'Stored x Live' to the Live position

11) A square will appear, drag it so that it frames the camera image. As shown on the preview, it is already capturing what is on screen and emulating a webcam!

12) Open MSN an see if it display a image (or logo) of a webcam. If so, you did it! Note that every time you open a device that uses a webcam, the damm Live X Stored button switch back to Stored.

Well, now you can call someone to a webcam conference at MSN (or the desired program), click at Live and take care so as not to frame some undesirable thing on screen 😀

I'm able to use it with Yahoo Messanger fine. Even macromedia flash recognizes it as a webcam, and if you use it right it works fine.
