Question about cable..

So I've been thinking about getting cable(yea im a little slow but i have my reasons) and I'm wondering if a 384 kb downsteam connection(from charter) is still viable for online gaming. For those that do have the 384kb down, what are your pings for online FPS-ers? Im basically asking this cause im planning on playing hl2 online and probably Doom 3 mods as well and Im not sure if a 384kb connection can handle it anymore. Thanks.

Your primary problem will be ping, rather than bandwidth(unless you are trying to run a server, in which case you can pretty much forget about it). Pretty much any multiplayer game these days is designed to be possible to play over a dialup, so it shouldn't pull more than maybe 5k a second at the minimum(many will pull more if you have more bandwidth, however). As for ping, that is highly dependent on the specifics of your situation, which I cannot judge(how far are you from your cable company's aggregation point, etc, etc.) but it will pretty much always be better than it was under dialup.
In short, you should have absolutely no problems.
