Is it true that if you buy something online in the US, you don't pay sales tax??

So if you were to buy a car online you wouldn't pay sales tax?? Do you guys have any idea how lucky you are? In Canada, you still have to pay sales tax if you buy something online.

I was thinking that if I could buy a car online in the States I wouldn't pay any taxes..but then I don't live there!! I could have got rid of a 15% sales tax!!!

A $21K car comes out to around $26K after all the taxes here in Ontario!!

Yes, but the cost of importing it would be taken into consideration, unless you go and pick it up in the US.

You're supposed to pay sales tax in the state you're in, if it applies. YOU have to report it, though. If you don't, they know nothing about it.
At least it's that way in NC

Pacfanweb, he's talking about Canada.

madd indian: you'll get charged taxes on it if it's shipped via USPS (since it'll be marked as merchandise) but if it's shipped by UPS you'll get screwed over even more. $30+ in fees on top of the tax. There is ways aroudn the charges I think but no companies are going to specially do that for you.

I meant as someone living in USE do you pay taxes if you bought something online in USA.

I did not mean as someone living in Canada buying online from America. I could always get my uncle in the States to buy stuff online and I could pick it up from him when I visit him.

Anyway how come we have to pay customs when we buy something from the USA..whatever happened to free-trade????

Ok if you purchase something from a company that does not have a bussiness presence in your state then you do not pay sales tax.

Some states NY and MN I know of have laws on the books that if you purchase anything out of state (online or otherwise) you have to declare it and pay sales tax on the VALUE of the Item. the Law in NY was struck down by the supreme court because the constituion says there will be NO INTRASTATE TARRIFS. No on the vehicle front you typically pay sales tax when you register if you haven't owned the vehicle for a certain amount of time.
