Question about BIOS update and installing a new cpu.

I'm trying to install a Q8300 into my motherboard. I'm replacing my current E2200
I have this mobo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128059

http://www.gigabyte.us/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=2629

It supports the 8300. but I think I might need to update the bios first?

Ok, so i have version F6 and the gigabyte site says version F9 is needed for the quad cores.

i tried using the Qflash utility on the motherboard. But it's not recognizing that I'm using a flash drive. The manual said a flashdrive in Fat 32 format will work, which is what I did. It's not working though. Doesn't recognize that i have it in.

ahh, should i just trying to install the cpu without flashing the bios?
Or should I try that @bios program for gigabyte that can flash it through Windows?

I tried the mobo flash program on an EP45-UD3R, I thought it supported using a flash drive too, but as it turns out, it only supports flashing from a floppy drive.

You need to make a DOS-bootable USB flash drive, using DOS system files and the HP Flash Drive Format Utility that's floating around the internet.

You definitely want to flash the BIOS before installing the new CPU.

u may simply need to go into your bios, and change the setting to allow it to use that device as bootable.. usually called "boot order" or "boot priority"

once i have a bootable usb. What exactly would I do next?

Just using the @bios utility seems like it'd be the easiest method...

Is updating bios from Windows really that bad?

the problem with update via windows . is that if something interrupts the process.. it could render your board unbootable ... so folks tend to steer clear.. If you do go this route.. make sure you disable things like antivirus, etc..

Going the preferred route, you can typically plug the usb or insert floppy, etc. .then boot up the pc.. With GIGABYTE i think you can then hit the 'end' key to intitiate the bios update process.. or the other way is to go into your systems bios via the delete key. .and then there should be an option to upgdate bios from within your bios (F8 maybe?)

then simply follow the instructions from there.. and jot down any settings as they will be lost... after you refresh...

I've updated my BIOS on Gigabyte MB several times, didn't have to make USB drive bootable. Did you unzip the download as explained in MB manual? When I did mine, I unzipped the file to USB, rebooted, hit "end" key to enter Q-Flash. Select "Update BIOS from Drive". This is what I see on screen -

Q-Flash Utility

0 Files found

HDD 2-0 <Drive>

This last line should be highlighted, click enter, you should see the BIOS file. Scroll to it and go....

I unzipped one of the files to the flash drive. The one that ended in .f or something like that.

The issue was that when I went into Q-flash, only Floppy A and Floppy B options were showing as drives, and I don't even have a floppy drive. It wasn't recognizing that I had a flash drive inserted.

Mine unzipped (2) files, the one that ends in fx (bios version) which is the one that came up in the Q-Flash screen. But I had another one, an executable (FLASHSPI.EXE) I put on the drive, that didn't show in the utility. I don't understand why it would say floppy. Did you try to click on it? Like I said, in my case it said HDD 2-0, not USB like I was looking for.

No, I don't really wanna go through the trouble of calling them>_>

Tonight I'll try a different flash drive I have and see if that works.

And updating through Windows should only take like a few seconds right? Just turn off anything that might popup and it should be fine?

Ya, i clicked on both of them.

It just said, it couldn't recognize the floppy or something like that.

haven't had time to look into this for a few days. So I tried using a smaller flash drive(256mb) and when I go to Q flash, I'm able to save my current bios to it. I had to choose floppy B, but it still went to the flash drive. It saved the bios. But if I try to update the BIOS, it shows something like this

... <dir>

Saved Bios

The saved bios, is what I named the saved bios file I saved.
It seems the issue now is that it's not recognizing that I have the updated bios files on my flash drive. But I'm pretty sure i do. I put it all in there.

hhmmm.......I guess it wouldn't hurt to try making a folder on the USB, and put the update files in it. Not sure about the BIOS but sometimes this is necessary within Windows to get it to "see" the file.

Wow. I decided to format to Fat 16 instead of fat32.

I was able to see the file finally, and finished flashing it.

wtf

That's great! Odd though. Mine worked with FAT 32, although I looked in the MB manual and they say it supports FAT 32/16/12 file systems. I wonder if it depends on which board?

make sure you have the latest versions of those apps

for temp.. try RealTemp if that doesn't work

That's what happened to me, Q-flash didn't recognize the USB flash drive at all, and only wanted a floppy, but there was no floppy drive in the machine.
