companies like EVGA and BFG offer a limited lifetime warranty. If I were to buy a used card from someone else would I still have the same lifetime warranty as the original buyer?

Read the warranty details. Most at least allow one transfer between owners. Also be careful what "lifetime" means. Some companies will say that it is the life of the videocard being on the market.

BFG/evga: warranty for original owner only
XFX: warranty for 1st and and 2nd owner

Frankly these warranties are pretty stupid, they should adopt the same warranties that hard drives have.

Please elaborate.
Hard drives have 3-5 years warranty regardless of in whose hands the hard drive is?

Yes, it could be passed around a like a "insert whore joke here" and still be replaced by the manufacturer if it fails. All they need is the serial number.
And like Christobevii3 said, lifetime doesnt mean that in 5 years you'll get a replacement, its just the life of the product on the market. If its not being sold anymore you lose.

BFG's limited lifetime warranty for video cards is...

BFG Technologies is proud to warrant the original purchaser of the graphics card included in this package ("Product") that the Product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns the product, when given normal wear and proper usage. This warranty is valid if the product:

So I guess as long as you don't overclock it, replace the HSF et cetera, you should be fine as long as you have the card.
