Question about banning IP's

If I understand correctly usual bannings(vacations) are by disabling the user account or putting a lock on it, but my question is about permanent bannings. If a person is permanently banned is their IP address just banned? I ask because whenever I check sites that display my IP address they come up as an IP address that is not mine. It comes up as one of the school's IPs but not mine. I believe that it comes up as the IP of our main server/access to the net, but I am not sure what IP it is.

I am interested because what if the situation came up that someone from my school was banned (permanently), but AT banned that one IP that I (and others) show up as? Is there anyway to find out what IP is on record for me perhaps? I am just curious because I don't want some dumb@ss at my school to be permanently banned and result in me losing access.

Thanks.

It's happened before where a user gets banned from a large pool of IP's and then another user under that same pool is banned as well.

Your best bet, don't send your friends to AT unless you trust they're not going to troll.

That is probably your school's proxy server. If your browser is configured to use it, then you could just disable it. However many places use an "invisible" proxy, where ALL traffic on port 80 passes through it (controlled by the network's routers and switches), and you can't do anything about it.

What happens? Everybody at your school can't use AT. AT is willing to and has banned entire ISP's because of the abuse of a few users.

But wouldny multiple people using the same IP to sign up for AT cause a problem or draw attention to them?

Is there a way to find out what IP is on record for my account?

I think the admins/mods can tell as well as anybody whether it's from a college, and make the leap to thinking it's a proxy server. If it were multiple signups from a single DSL IP address or something, then they'd probably nuke the accounts. There's no technical reason multiple accounts can't come from a single IP.

You'd have to email the mods to see about checking your IP. Keep in mind your IP isn't exactly "associated" with your account, the logs would just show that when you signed up, you were coming from that IP. You can later log in from any IP address, it doesn't matter.
