Question about backing up programs for Windows re-installation

I'm getting ready to do a CPU/mobo swap, so I'll be re-installing WinXP Pro. I used Nero to back up my entire "C" drive to another HDD. Now, after I re-installing Windows, can I simply go into the old Program Files folder, copy the program folders of the programs I want to keep, and paste them into the new Program Files folder and expect them to work? Or will I need to re-install every program from scratch to get them to work properly?

Also, if I try the same thing with the contents of the old My Documents folder, will all my pictures, documents, and music make the transition ok?

I would appreciate any insight you guys could give me. TIA.

When you install programs most will add a registery entery into the...registry. Simply copy/pasting them back might not work.

Regardless, I think I would avoid all possible headaches and just reintall the apps again.

Your my docs folder will make the transitition fine.

If you are not changing the hard drive, just put in the new Mobo / CPU
then do a Repair Install of Windows so it can load any new drivers it needs
You will also likely have to reactivate Windows and depending on your
version, it may need a call to Microsoft to do so

You should use Ghost or TruImage to do your hard drive backups.
I do not trust Nero for that sort of task.

Hmm, I didn't know you could do a repair installation. Do you think this would be ok even if I'm going from a S-478 P4 setup to an AMD X2 rig?
