Question about auto insurance

A friend of mine is "leasing" a car from another friend, but he has no insurance. The actual owner of the car indeed have insurance, and my friend insists that he is fully covered as a result. I make no claims to being a pundit in insurance policy, so I delegate this question to the diverse folks on ATOT. Is he covered?

I'm referring primarily to what would happen if my friend hit someone, and that someone required medical attention. If they sued him for damages, would he still be covered? I've reviewed my own policy, and I see no mention of any such condition for or against.

I was just reviewing my new policy a few days ago, and it says I'm covered for (don't remember exact wording) brief periods of other people driving the car.

Yeah, I would expect that, but in this particular scenario the guy driving someone elses car isn't insured at all.

From what I understand the way it works out, when there is a collision in a vehicle driven by someone other than the owner, is that any comp damages to the vehicle are covered by the owner's insurance and any liability damages (other vehicles, etc) is covered by the driver's insurance, regardless if it is personal insurance or vehicle insurance. If they don't have any insurance it's really up to what the owner's policy states.

tell them to read their policy. it will spell it out.

(i'm in CA, my insurance is AAA)

for example: my car if another driver drives it, my car will be covered in case of accident if the driver of my car is at fault. this covers insured and uninsured drivers. when you're pulled over i believe they only ask for proof of insurance and not your own personal insurance anyways. there are two people excluded from my policy - my dad and my bf since he's considered a "regular" risk. my dad, it doesn't really matter, because he also has AAA insurance and is also insured for any car he drives. my bf's insurance doesn't have that coverage, so if he drives my car and crashes it AAA will not cover it and neither will his insurance.

the guy should still have car insurance since he's "leasing" a car. he's freeriding right now...

You pay insurance based on the car and your driving record. If someone borrows your car on a temporary basis (as in, let me have your keys so I can run to the store and get ice) you're covered. If someone is driving your car on a daily basis and the insurance company doesn't know about it, they can deny coverage, particularly in an instance like this.

I wouldn't hold my breath for coverage, at least if the insurance company knows the truth.
