I have heard people say that ati beat nvidia a long time ago and nvidia now is far behind in technology. Is that true at all ? Is the x85xt better than the 6800 ultra extreme edition? A reply to inform me would be nice. thanks.

Hello, please dont start threads like this here.

You will notice this is going to start into a flamewar about SLI and SM3.

To answer your question, they are about equal.

I would read a few hardware reviews and forum topics on the net and form my own opinion if I were you. Try AT, HardOCP, PC prespective, etc. The merits of shader model 3.0 (a technology present only on NVIDIA cards at this time) has undergone great debate as of late, and I suggest you poke around this forum to get a range of facts and opinions...and lots in-between.

"Better" is too subjective a word to be directly addressed (by me anyway).

I think, personally, that both have something to offer a user. Both cards excel at certain things.

The decision you have to make is which things are more important to you (this is not an invitation for a fanboi to jump on board). :)

damm....this thread is really goin to attract fanboys from both side of the table!!!
well ATI did dethrone nvidia with their radeon 9700pro but they are evenly placed now at the moment with nvidia probably have a slight edge...both offer good products so i dont really care who is better!!

Both have something to offer in different areas. There is no real true definitive awnser as to who is winning this round in the hardware battles. It depends on which side of the fence you roll on in this crazy eletric world of computing.

I would like to see the x850xt against the 6800 ultra EE. They are the best cards today right?

ATI was killing Nvidia until the 6800 came out. Now they are about even, with the exceptence of Nvidia SLI. The X800 XT/X850 XT are a bit better then the 6800 Ultra and perform better in the majority of games slightly (with a few exceptions on both sides). But the 6800 Ultra supports Shader Model 3.0, which makes it more futureproof.

You decide, performance on ATI (besides SLI) or features on Nvidia.

Here are some benchmarks:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/r420-2.html

And HL2 is predominitaly ATI's incase you play it.

The UEE is a bad example, simply because it's not a common card (and there was never a release of the card...it was a name designation for a core/memory speed of a card that nVidia never directly released, but some manu's, such as eVGA, offer).

yup....the ultra extreme never got out except to a few partners...the x850xt was just a desperate move by ATI to try and fill the gap they had since they were unable to suppy any x800xt-pe cards, nvidia made a good choice by not launching a useless refresh!! by performance across is very similar although the x850xt does perform slightly better in most games

Isn't the x850 xt a new card? Isn't it better than the x800 xt pe like the 5900 is better than 5800?

They're both very good cards, but the question really is what u plan to use the card for and how much u wanna spend (or willing to spend for that matter).

IMO, new video cards are way too expensive... buy one that meets ur needs and nothing less and more if u get a good deal!

Read some online reviews (there's tons of them with comparisons to equally powerful cards plus inferior ones too that out-balance it due to price factors) and make a decision for urself.

Laters!
