Question about Athlon XP (Barton) Overclocking

In the next couple of days, I plan on starting to purchase a few items to upgrade my system. That includes the CPU, MB, RAM and case.

Now, the system I have now sounds like a jet engine and I'd like a quiet system this time around. The case I have chosen is the Antec Sonata, of course. I know that there are some cooling issues with this case and was wondering if it is possible to overclock a system effectively and safely using this case.

I think I'll be choosing the Abit AN7 (Nforce2 Ultra 400) MB and the Barton 2500+ along with Mushkin PC3200 RAM.

Ok, with that being said, how far could I overclock (safely) the Barton and what hsf, fans, etc would I need to buy to ensure that.

Is it possible to reach Barton 3000+ speeds and I've started to hear stuff about the Mobile XP's. Can you use those processors in a regular Socket A system and if so, do they normally run faster and cooler?

Thanks guys.

Yes, I would definately recommend the mobile bartons and they do work in a regular socket A. My "dud" of a chip is running at 2.4ghz as we speak. Been stable that way for about two weeks now. So, if you get the mobile barton 2500+ you are probably looking at about 2.5ghz. I would recommend the SLK947U with an 92mm fan. This should keep things pretty cool.

Who makes that SLK947U? Is that a HSF?

How do the Barton 2500+ and the Mobile 2500+ compare in speed?

Take a trip over to the Cases & Cooling forum to figure out which HSF you want, there are alot that do a fantastic job. I have 5 fans in my case, one intake in the front, one intake in the side panel, one exhuast on the top, and two exhaust out the back. Make sure to tidy up the wires and move them to the drive bays or corners to help airflow. Once you have done that your Sonata should work well. Personally I would go with a Mobile 2400+ or 2500+. I have both and an unlocked 2500+ and I prefer the Mobile 2500+. The Mobiles can run in a Socket A, and at stock they are 1.425 volts making them much cooler.

Thermalright makes the SLK947U. It's just a heatsink. You still need to provide your own fan. The regular 2500+ and Mobile 2500+ are essentially the same chip, but with the former using a 333 FSB as default and the later using 266 FSB as default. The advantage of the Mobile is that the chips are supposedly choice picked by AMD and uses less voltage, thereby allowing more overclocking room. Speaking for myself, my regular 2500+ Barton does 11x200 and boots up as a 3200XP without breaking a sweat. The mobiles are reputed to do even better.

If you are overclocking, definately go with the mobile, they are the same speed at stock, but you can usually get the mobile to 3200 at the voltage that would be stock for a non-mobile, also go with the nf7-s, as it has been proven to overclock better.

Couple things since U mentioned noise and I fashion myself an expert on having spent hundreds of dollars just on fans and a few hundred on PSUs.

1. Why choose that case? It has a extremly noisy 120mm fan in back. If you do I recommend changing it to 7 or even 5 volts. Has a very good PS though. Get the fan mate or undervolt manually to 5V if you get this case.

2. Why AN7? It has a loud ass NB heat sink. I recommend either DFI untra infinity with passive solution or swaping to zalmans passive NB HS for $5.99. Then you're silent.

3. Get a moblie barton which are hand picked primo chips running at signifigantly less volts to achieve same bartons speeds.

4. Then pair that with the silent Zalman 7000CU HSF.

Here's what I'd recommend for your CPU, MB, RAM.

Moblie Barton 2400 $77
2x256 Ch-5 Buffalo PC3200 $88
DFI Ultra infinity $93

For around $250 this system will OC most excellent.
