Question about Athlon processors with 266 fsb...

I'm planning on building a new computer from scratch (for the first time). I was going to go with an athlon this time, the 1.33 with the 266 fsb. Planning on using 384 megs of crucial cas2 pc133 memory.

Today when I was discussing this with someone, he told me that I could not run the fsb at 266, since I was only using pc133 memory. According to him, the memory has to be clocked at 266 to use the 266 fsb?? I know that NO memory is clocked at that, but he raised questions in my mind.

Never building a computer before, I don't know if this is true or not. Will I be able to use the fsb at 266? If not, then what do I have to do to make use of the 266 fsb? Any help or advice on how this all works will be much appreciated. Trying to get all of this put together in the next two weeks (hopefully).

The host clock, what the RAM sees, is half of the processor FSB. So in your case the RAM will run at 133Mhz, or what it's rated at.

There are much smarter guys here who can explain this in detail, so I'll keep it simple.

YES you can use PC133 RAM on this system.

Mainly, I think he was telling me that the FSB would have to be run at 133 and NOT 266, if I had PC 133 memory. He totally confused me of what I THOUGHT I already knew.

So this is not true? I'll be able to take advantage of the 266 fsb using the pc 133 memory?

That is correct, the FSB will still operate at 266Mhz while the RAM is running at 133.
