if i buy the kt7a which has ultra ata 100 connectors and i buy an ibm deskstar 75gxp which can run at u ata 100, do i need special cable for u ata 100 or is it just one cable for ata 33/66/100? and how do i know if i'm running at ata 100?

The cable needed for ata 100 is the same as ata 66 and your mobo and hard drive should each come with the proper cable, if you buy retail versions. The ata 33 cable is different, it has 40 wires as opposed to 80 on the ata 66/100 cables. To tell if you are truly running at ata 100 run HD tach and if your read burst speed is over 66 Mps then you are running ata 100.

There are many Hard Drives that do not come with cables regardless if you buy retail. They're more likely to come with a motherboard. Nonetheless you can get them cheap anywhere.
