Question about ASUS motherboard's onboard leds

Hi there,

My motherboard is an ASUS Z97 Sabertooth Mark 1.

Although my system works normally, I've noticed something I'm not sure is supposed to be happening.

Whenever I manually enter the UEFI BIOS (via DEL key), the BOOT_DEVICE_LED stays red until I either exit the UEFI BIOS or hit F8 and choose an option to boot from. This doesn't happen when I let it go straight to the OS or if I disconnect the SSD that contains the OS and it enters the UEFI BIOS automatically.

Is this standard behavior or is it an indication that something is wrong?

Thank you.

Sounds like normal behavior, it cycles through a bunch of tests before it boots. If the lights stay on then you would have an issue.

Because you haven't booted yet...

So it's supposed to stay lit because it detects a bootable device and I don't let it boot from it for manually entering the BIOS? As opposed to when it enters the BIOS automatically because no bootable device is found? (since in this case the light does go off)

With so many thread views and after 2 full days, I would have thought that someone would do me the favor of taking a minute to enter their bios, check their boot device led and confirm or deny that this situation also applies in their case. This is still unresolved so if someone can go through that trouble, I'll be thankful.

I just took at look at your owners manual and it clearly states on page 1-28 that the led's stay lit when a problem exists.

Yes, I did see that and it's too vague. It doesn't give any details about each of the LEDs. In my particular case, why is the boot device led indicating a problem when I access the bios and only if I do it manually by spamming a key on startup? (again, it doesn't happen if there's no bootable device and I automatically enter the bios)

EDIT: The fact that I know that if an led stays lit means there's an issue was the reason why I created this thread in the first place and why I'm looking for a comparison.

I have LEDs on when it entered the BIOS. They go away when the OS starts loading. Nothing to worry about.

This is why I buy motherboards with the debug/q code led so I can actually see what the problem is.

Actually, I rebooted the machine just so that I could be sure that I was giving you a correct answer. When a computer is working perfectly, I really don't care what the LEDs are doing.

And you have a red light kind of between the 24-pin and the USB 3.0 connectors that stays lit while inside the bios until you boot into the OS from it, correct? Thanks for having checked again.

EDIT: By specifying this location I'm assuming you're checking on the Sabertooth Mark 1 you have in your sig.

That's the first thing I did. There's nothing about the boot device led in there other than its location on the board.

Usually the manual will tell you what the LED is for, like active HDD(lite when in use). It's not rocket science, if your in the bios then it wouldn't be active.

Seen a few questions in the last few days which make me stop n scratch my head, it's as if there being asked to come in here with these questions?

It clearly isn't in the manual. Load up the manual yourself and look for any info on the motherboard's boot device led. Like I said, the only info about it is its location on the board. In fact, if the boot device led being lit while in the bios is normal, the manual is just misleading because it states that an led that stays lit means there's a problem. HDD? I'm talking about motherboard leds, not case leds. Are you confused?
