I used some Artic Silver on my Duron 650 recently and I tried to get it off but it just stained the cpu and now it looks silver. IS there anyway to remove the Artic Silver off the CPU to get it looking back to normal? Would you guys suggest using the Artic Silver still even though its going to leave a permanent stain on the CPU? I am getting a 1Ghz either today or tomorrow and I want to know if I should apply it on there or not, is it worth it?

Ive heard from a few around this forum that there is a removal kit being sold somewhere (undescriptive, I know). Maybe do a search for that. I would use a little alcohol with a cotton rag and see what you can remove. My question is, does it really matter what it looks like as long as its cool? I just assume that my processor is pretty under the goop.

Just take a q-tip and swab it with some isopropyl alcohol aka. rubbing alcohol

I did it to my geforce chip and it got it's black color back :)

You could clean it with rubbing alcohol. What do you mean by the CPU is stained silver? Do you mean the core? If you only apply the Arctic Silver on the core where it belongs, you should not have a problem with it getting on anything else. Even if you do, it does not harm anything, and who is going to see it under the heatsink? :)

I tried Arctic Silver, Circuit Works Silver, Radio Shack compound, the stuff that ships with the Alpha and could't really tell any difference at all between them. And yes regular old isopropyl alcohol works great. You should clean your cpu and core before you apply any kind of compound anyway.

In a related question.

I just received a used Duron CPU which has some Arctic Silver on it.

I am wondering if I need to clean off the "old" residue off the core before I install my new HS.? (start with clean core..so when I add new Arc Silver it has a better surface....) Does this make sense?

My question..
I have the Arctic Silver should add more to the old residue....or clean first?

Thanks

I used the compound that came with the alpha for the longest and just applied artic silver recently. I cleaned it off first and I think that would be the best thing to do. I didn't notice a big temperature either.
