Question about application of OCZ Freeze on quad cpu

Hey,
I might be asking many questions at the moment, but I just want to minimize the number of errors when assembling my PC for the first time :)

I have a question regarding how to apply OCZ freeze thermal paste to a quad cpu (q9450). On OCZ's website they just tell you to put a "grain of rice" in the middle (thats for all kind of cpu's), but I've seen in the instructions for Arctic Silver 5, that you should make a thin line of paste across the two dual cores in the cpu.

So my question is: Would this method be suited for the OCZ freeze paste as well, or should I stick with the "grain of rice" procedure ?

Nobody knows? Or doesn't it matter what method I use?

I'm eager to continue assembling :D

Maybe give it some time, your OP was at 430AM, not many are up then. They you ask again at 730am, west coasters are still deep in sleep now! ;)

This is probably the most debated question on the tech forums. It depends on what HS you have, and is it or your CPU's IHS lapped.
Read this thread:

To add another variable, what grain (short?) of rice is OCZ referring to. They differ in size. Link

Experiment with different application methods until you find the one the gives you the best temps.
Personally, I am using Artic Cooling MX-2 and use the AS line method for my Q6600 and a BB size blob in the middle (~4.3 to 4.5 mm diameter) for my dual core Opteron 170.

Gillbot, Yeah sorry, I'm from Denmark and forgot the time difference ;)

I asked because it's the first time I do this, so I don't have the routine in installing cpu+heatsink. I hoped for some clear answer, but apparently there isn't. I have a Xigmatec HDT-S1283 cooler btw..

MadScientist: I read the benchmarkreview article about this stuff, the Arctic silver method wasn't mentioned as far as I can see, but I found some article http://www.overclockerspulse.c...scorpion-s1283-review/ where they apparently use that method with good results.

I guess I will try the AS method as a start :)

Yeah, but the Arctic Silver method would suggest a line across all three heatpipes.. in the article you link to, it looks like the best method is two lines between the heatpipes, but will this be suited if I don't intend to lap the heatsink?

I know lapping will probably make a better result, but I don't have any sandpaper atm :)
