question about apartment security deposit

Lifer
OK I am moving out of my current apartment next month, I just filed a moving out notice to the apartment complex.

My question is: the security deposit is only 99 dollars when I moved in (they had a special advertisement), if the repair (cleaning, etc) for my apartment exceed this amount, are they able to bill me for the excess??

I am asking this because my POS past roomate left a friggin hole of the size of a fist on a wall (maybe he punched the wall), I emailed him about this, and he just acts like nothing happened....

Hang a mirror over it 🙂
Oh, and always look behind mirrors when looking at property 😀

I'm gonna say I don't think so, but I'm not sure. It probably has more to do with your lease contract than anything.

Well if you didnt tell the landlord about the hole your roomy left when he was living there then its on you for repairs.

And yes they will charge you for it.

If it's only $99 then I wouldn't worry about it. If you want to fix it, go to home depot and get some "joint compound" and a square piece of drywall. Measure carefully, and it can be fixed.

Well I don't think they can take anymore than the original deposit. Why don't you get some polyfill and a mesh wall filling kit and just patch the hole? It's pretty easy to do.Then the wall will be all ready to paint.

I think that it is clear cut yes.

You have to leave the place how you found it or pay. The deposit just makes it easier for the landlord to get a portion of the money that they are owed. You break it, you bought it.

Maybe you can patch it before you move to reduce the damage amount.

Good luck, and be more careful choosing roomates.
