Question about apartment renting

I'm on a lease that's set to end at the end just before the end of the month

The standard policy is that tenants must notify the landlord (of decision to renew or close the lease or otherwise) 30 days before the end of lease

Ive heard that if the notification is not made before those 30 days, then the lease term is automatically renewed.

Is this generally true? Or does it vary widely from place-to-place? (Obviously I'll ask the landlord themselves tomorrow but im looking for a quick 8pm answer)

I don't know about your state, but in CA, it goes to month to month if you don't renew and then the owner has 60 days to kick you out if they want to.

They don't automatically renew my lease here. If I don't sign a new lease before the 30 days, then I'm considered month-to-month if I haven't given notice to move out that is.

On a month-to-month, my rent would be hiked up another 30% per month until I signed a new lease or gave notice to move.

Thanks for the assurance. I thought as much, too... but didnt know (month-to-month) was the norm or common.
