For those of you who have adopted pets from animal shelters, do the pets come cleaned up and bathed already or are they kinda dirty as if they were out in the wild for a while? I figure humane societies would do it but not sure about the animal shelters that house hundreds (or thousands) of animals.

They are normally perfectly clean and healthy, they should have been spayed/neutered and also given their first round of shots/vaccinations. At least if it's a reputable shelter they will be.

If you go to adopt something and they give you a dirty, nasty, animal, I'd go somewhere else.

They do, and this is what the fee they have covers.

I volunteered at one that was $30 for adult dogs, and $60 for puppies, as they usually require more immuizations and care. Cats were a flat $30.
